French Cardinal Convicted- A Warning

From the Associated Press: “French cardinal convicted of not reporting abuse.” Cardinal Philippe Barbarin was convicted for failing to report accusations of priestly child abuse to judicial authorities. He got a suspended six-month sentence – not even a slap on the wrist. But this does set a legal precedent, and at very least serves as a warning.

The Catholic Church refuses to hold bishops and cardinals accountable, often doing less than is required by law. Pope Francis’ summit on abuse did nothing to change this. Some national authorities are beginning to take matters into their own hands. But while Pope Francis should be glad the authorities are freeing him from internal political fights, and forcing him to do the right thing, I suspect he will direct the Church propaganda machine to consider it an act of religious persecution.
