Evangelicals and America

A brief note about some mind-boggling results from the latest General Social Survey. For those unfamiliar with the GSS, it has been conducted annually since 1972, and meets far higher technical standards than normal surveys you read of.

The study found that one-third of Americans believe that being a Christian is a "very important" part of being "truly American." Two-thirds of evangelicals believe this, along with many in black churches. This reflects profound ignorance of both the founding fathers and the Constitution. I will have more to say about evangelicals in the near future. They also know precious little about Jesus and his teachings.
